Susan Isaac's recent solo exhibition focused on the landscape around St Ives and the Penwith peninsula of west Cornwall. Susan's first visits to the Cornish coast took the form of childhood summer holidays, sparking a lifelong love for the area.

The series of paintings that formed the core of the exhibition reflect the particular quality and clarity of light on the Cornish coast in summer. They evoke the subtle harmonising colours of the region with its silvery granite buildings tinged by saffron lichen, and juxtaposed against teal-blue sea and pale ochre beach sand.

Some reveal landscapes haunted by the remains of past human industry.

Underlying Susan's paintings of the Cornish coast is a sense of the never-ending movement of the sea. Rising and falling waters hide and reveal beaches and rocks and pour between sea walls to fill and then empty harbours as if they were great languorous hourglasses - part of a shoreline undulating to the rhythm of 'time and tide'.
