Susan made these pieces whilst living in Ironbridge, where part of her work consisted of illustrating finds from the area. The man's head and horse's head appear rather like fragments of pottery, but going beyond this to convey a sense of movement. The quarter turn of the man's head and the emphasis of lines in his face convey a sense of straining under manual labour. The horse's head is gathered into the neck as if ready to rear or gallop. The winged figure is again about movement, but through the whole body. |
